Proper sun protection is always advised, but dermatological exams can help make sure your skin is continuously healthy as you get older.

Dermatology exams can also track the development of moles, birthmarks, and rashes, and offer individualized treatment plans to monitor and care for any skin conditions.

Gastrointestinal Health

Digestive health is very important and it starts with the health of the Gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The GI tract includes the mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. Examining the health of your GI Tract can be done with a colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy is an exam which helps your doctor detect any changes or abnormalities in the large intestine, or colon, and the rectum. This exam screens for colon cancer in a patient, but also can help determine the source behind other health issues, such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea or constipation, and other problems with the intestines.

A few days before a colonoscopy exam, eat a low-fiber diet without whole grains, nuts, or raw fruits and vegetables. The day before a colonoscopy, a patient cannot eat any solid foods, consuming only clear liquids like broth, black coffee or tea, and clear juice. A patient can also eat clear soft drinks or sports drinks, and Jell-O. The day of the colonoscopy exam, a patient must continue the clear liquid food diet, but a patient can’t eat or drink anything two hours before the exam.

Adult men between the ages of 45 and 79 should schedule regular exams to monitor the health of their colon.

Sexual Screening and Counseling

Sexual health is an important aspect of adult men’s health, and this includes STD prevention, prostate screening, sexual disfunction, family planning, and contraception. Provida Family Medicine’s highly trained medical team will provide you with the information you need to protect yourself and stay healthy.

Our staff will answer the questions you have in a safe and comfortable environment and offer counseling, sexual health screenings for infections and diseases, and other educational resources.

STD Prevention

STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, are infections that are transmitted during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Some STDs have very apparent symptoms while others have a long incubation period where a patient is unaware that they are carrying a disease, but without treatment, STDs can lead to serious health issues for a patient.

To screen for these diseases, a member of Provida Family Medicine’s medical team will take a urine sample and a cheek swab to preform on-site testing for any STDs. A blood test may also be needed to test for STDs preformed by taking blood from your arm or a finger prick.

Prostate Screening

Prostate screening is a recommended exam for adult men to detect prostate cancer in men who may not be showing any symptoms. Men should have their first prostate exam at age fifty, however each patient is different, and patients are encouraged to discuss prostate cancer screenings with their doctor as men with a high risk for prostate cancer may need these screenings to start earlier on in life.

Sexual dysfunction can affect men of all ages but most commonly takes place in older men. Common problems caused by sexual dysfunction include ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunction, and inhibited sexual desire.

Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that attacks your joints, but can damage other body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels. Some symptoms of arthritis are tender and swollen joints, stiffness in the joints that worsens after inactivity, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

Early on, rheumatoid arthritis usually affects smaller joints first, mainly in the joints in your fingers, hands, toes, and feet. With progress, pain often spreads to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips, and shoulders on both sides of your body.

While there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, there are treatment options available, including physical therapy and medication to slow the disease’s progression. If you are experiencing these symptoms or would like to explore your treatment options, please visit Provida Family Medicine as soon as possible.
